What Is Henry James Bicycles?

Henry James Bicycles, Inc. has been designing American made investment cast steel lugs and other frame components since 1977 (Incorporated in California in 1979). Our philosophy is to design, make, sell and distribute quality products made in America. We make investment cast lugs, bottom bracket shells, fork crowns, and dropouts (fork ends).

In 1990 we introduced our first Frame & Fork Jig for building custom bicycle frames and limited production bicycle frames. Then we added our Bridge and Boss Jig for placing cantilever brake bosses, brake bridges, and chain stay bridges.

Another significant addition to our line of bicycle frame building equipment is our Henry James Alignment System, U.S. Patent No. 5,694,699. This device aligns both road and mountain bicycle frames.

The Fit Finder is a rider fitting device or bicycle sizing system. This allows dealers to fit cyclists to their bicycle, and allows dealers and custom bicycle frame builders to do complete custom fittings of bicycle riders.

Henry James products are designed for road bicycles and mountain bikes. Our products are used on road and track racing bicycles, off-road racing bicycles, cyclocross bicycles, touring bicycles, hybrid/city/comfort bikes, and mountain bikes.

Who Is Henry James?

Henry JamesHenry James is Henry James Folson, or more commonly, Hank Folson. My business philosophy is to stand behind my products, so I used my name for my business. However, as people seldom spell Folson correctly, I stopped after Henry James.

On rare occasions, I am asked if Henry James is connected with the famous author. No. My paternal grandfather died in a car-train collision when my father was a youth, so my first name is Henry, in memory of my grandfather. James was the first name of my maternal grandfather.

My education as it relates to bicycles includes:

Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering
University of Manitoba, Canada (1962)
Master's Degree in Welding Engineering
Cranfield Institute of Technology, England (1964)
Masters Degree In Product Design
Stanford University, USA (1966)
My main interest in bicycles is riding them, for just about all the reasons people ride a bike, with the exception of competition. Making components for custom bikes appeals to me as I know that really enjoying bicycling can be a lot easier with a properly fitted bike, designed for the type of riding you want to do. I develop frame building equipment to assist my Custom Frame Builder customers, and for the design challenge.
